Spring is a great time to focus on health and well being. Beginning a running program or training for a half marathon is a perfect way to achieve that goal.
It may be raining or snowing right now, but spring is around the corner. This year, instead of concentrating on those “spring cleaning” projects, why not make an effort to do something that will improve your health and well-being? Run. Whether it is signing up for a half marathon, or just running to get outside, spring is a great time to start. In this poor economy, running is an inexpensive way to become healthy. There is no need to purchase expensive gym memberships or buy a lot of expensive equipment. Running simply requires a good pair of running shoes and the desire to start. Before starting any exercise program it is important to consult a physician. According to an article by Dixie L. Thompson, Ph.D, “Walking for Health,” in the summer of 2006 American College of Sports Medicine newsletter, Fit Society Page, 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day has significant health benefits. These include:
Running ShoesThe first step is finding a good pair of running shoes. Everyone has a different gait to his or her running. Some runners have a neutral gait, some over-pronate and others under- pronate. Pronation is when the foot rolls from the outer edge of the foot to the inner edge. Going to a running store, being evaluated and fit for the right shoe is a key way to prevent injury. Good running shoes average about $100 a pair, but is a valuable investment that should not be taken lightly. Join a Running GroupSecond, decide to devote time to running. Running requires motivation and dedication. Will power alone may not work. To help with motivation, find a friend or join a running group. Either of these can help on days when fatigue or lack of desire is an issue. To find a local organization, look on the Road Runners Club of America’s website for a list of running groups in your area. If goals include running a half marathon or a marathon, proper training is essential. According to marathon rookie, a website dedicated to marathon training, it is important to be able to run for 30 minutes consecutively before concentrating on training for an endurance run. To get a complete training guide visit Road Runners Club of America, for advice and guidelines. Focusing on health and happiness goes a long way in this tough economic time. Spring is around the corner, it is time to get those shoes on and go!
